Appliance Recovery & Refurbishment Technician
Location: Honeydew, Johannesburg | On-site
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: Technical Services & Warehouse Manager
Role Overview
This is a physically active and technically focused role for someone passionate about electronics, sustainability, and precision work. You will be responsible for managing the recovery process of returned appliances, ensuring they are tested, repaired, cleaned, and repackaged to meet resale standards.
Key Responsibilities
Product Returns & Recovery
- Receive and unpack returned appliances.
- Physically inspect and test units for functionality.
- Assess repairability and determine recovery potential.
- Clean, disinfect, and repackage appliances to shelf or showroom quality.
- Sort and strip non-repairable units for recycling and parts recovery.
Technical Repairs & Diagnostics
- Perform hands-on repairs on small electrical appliances.
- Use diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeter) to identify faults.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
- Ensure all recovered units meet quality and safety standards.
Reporting & Documentation
- Draft clear technical reports for internal use and overseas suppliers.
- Maintain accurate records of recovered units, parts used, and repair outcomes.
- Use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for documentation and communication.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with warehouse, technical, ecommerce, sales teams and management.
- Occasionally interact with customers via phone or email in a professional manner.
- Liaise with external suppliers and partners regarding parts and processes.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Education: Minimum 2 years of electronics studies (e.g., Wits Technikon or similar).
- Experience: Hands-on experience with appliance diagnostics and repairs.
- Tools: Must own a multimeter or electrical tester and tools - a sign of genuine interest and commitment.
- Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and methodical work habits.
- Ability to work neatly, cleanly, and thoroughly.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Personal Attributes:
- Technically curious and solution-oriented.
- Reliable, organized, and self-motivated.
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual tasks.
- Passionate about sustainability and reducing electronic waste.
Work Distribution
- Hands-on technical work: 85%
- Desk-based reporting/admin: 15%
